10 Ways to Style a Coffee Table

As the heart of your living area, your coffee table is often a focal point of this room. A well-styled coffee table can help elevate the look of your living space while contributing to the ambiance of your home.

Coffee tables come in all shapes and sizes. And while some coffee tables act as centrepieces themselves, like the Amara Delta Coffee Table in Natural Ocean Marble from GlobeWest ($4,145), there are a few styling tricks you can use to create a cohesive space.

So, to help you enhance the visual appeal of your living area, here are 10 ways to style a coffee table.

1. Picking the perfect coffee table

If you don’t already have an existing coffee table or you’re looking to update your existing table, you’ll need to start by selecting a coffee table to suit your living space. Although coffee tables are functional pieces of furniture, that’s not to say you can’t have fun with them at the same time.

The Ripple Coffee Table from Kastillo ($1,400) provides a modern spin on a classic timber coffee table. While the timber finish offers warmth, the ripple edges and tubular legs make a bold statement.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to add colour to your living space, you can’t go past the Frankie Coffee Table in Gloss Dusk from GlobeWest ($1,430). With a gloss dusk rose finish, this coffee table is the perfect way to inject a pop of pink into your living area.

2. Incorporate textures into your styling

Different textures help to add interest and dimension. Rather than using objects that are all the same material, your coffee table will look much more balanced when you blend different textures and materials. Combine materials like glass, metal, wood and fabric to create a dynamic living room centrepiece.

Our property stylists used this approach when styling a property for sale on Jarnahill Drive Mount Coolum. While the living room features darker shades in the coffee table, occasional chair, cushions and throw, our stylist incorporated lighter colours, varying heights and different textures when styling the coffee table.

3. Play with height

When it comes to styling your coffee table, incorporating items of differing heights is essential for adding visual appeal. Mix tall items, like vases, with shorter pieces, like trays or books, to create a varied, dynamic look.

By pairing matching pots of different heights, our stylist was able to contrast these pieces when styling the living space at Bluebird Parade, Bokarina.

4. Use a tray

Adding a tray to your coffee table is a simple way to organise smaller items and create a cohesive look. Choose a tray that complements your décor. Think wooden for rustic, metallic for modern or mirrored for a glamorous touch. Once you’ve selected your tray, you can style it with candles, a small plant or decorative objects.

For example, our round marble-look tray makes the perfect addition to your coffee table. Use it to house smaller items or as a base for a candle, plant or vase. Available to purchase for $90 via our SHOP.

5. Incorporate books

Books are ideal for adding height and visual interest. Opt for large coffee table books with striking covers that reflect your interests. Alternatively, you can stack a few books and top them with a small odd-shaped item, like a candle or sculpture to really catch the eye.

We styled the coffee table at Narambi St, Warana, with an open book paired with a trailing pot plant. The book’s cover also added a pop of colour to the coastal-themed living space.

6. Add greenery

Plants and flowers bring life, colour and a certain softness to a living area. Use fresh flowers, succulents or a small plant that spills over the side of the pot to breathe life into your living space. Not only are plants a great way to incorporate height into your coffee table, but you can also use a vase to add texture.

Our organic glass vase not only adds texture and height to your coffee table, but it’s also the perfect vessel to house a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Available for $49 via the Blink Living SHOP.

7. Appeal to the senses

In addition to enhancing the aesthetic allure of your living room, use your coffee table to appeal to all your senses. Candles bring warmth and ambiance, and a scented candle can also add a wonderful aroma to your living space. Experiment with candles of differing heights or place them in a decorative holder to add another layer to your coffee table decor.

Our striped marble tray pairs perfectly with a scented candle. Find this piece for $80 at the Blink Living SHOP.

 8. The rule of three

When it comes to styling your coffee table, good things come in threes. Grouping decor items in clusters of three creates impact, minimising the need to clutter your coffee table with more knick-knacks.

We’ve made coffee table styling easy for you with our $53 bundle that includes two pillar candle holders and a tall vase. While these items feature the same ribbing, the differing heights and colours are enough to add contrast to your coffee table. Purchase this bundle via the SHOP.

 9. Bigger is better

Rather than styling your coffee table with a collection of different trinkets, it’s often better to go big and bold with a single, large centrepiece. Lots of smaller pieces and make your table appear cluttered, whereas a larger item can create a bigger visual impact. Think a statement vase, a unique sculpture or an eye-catching book to draw attention and anchor the table’s design. That said, it’s important to make sure the focal point doesn’t overwhelm the space.

10. Keep it functional

Coffee tables serve a purpose, so it’s important to balance style with functionality. Coasters or a small storage box are practical additions that can still elevate the aesthetic appeal of your coffee table. Just be sure to leave some empty space for drinks or other items that may need to be placed on the table.
