Décor and Design 2024: Interior Design Principles and Key Takeaways

In case you missed it, the Blink Living team attended the Decor and Design Show 2024 in Melbourne. We are delighted to share that our entire team of interior designers and property stylists participated in the event to gain fresh inspiration and insights from many esteemed designers and suppliers. We thought it would be enjoyable to share these learnings with our community, as we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Our team attended the fair on Thursday, July 18th, and participated in the Visual Storytelling Seminar with Brahman Perera and Amelda Wilde.

Top Interior Design Principles 2024

Creating Wow Moments in Every Room

During Amelda’s behind-the-scenes discussion of the VON LEACH residence project, she emphasised the importance of each room having an element of surprise. This surprise could be something unusual or unexpected; in her case, it was the materials and scale she used that created this effect. For those looking to apply this concept at home, the element of surprise could be a pop of colour in your living room, the material of a floor lamp in your bedroom, or the texture of wallpaper in your powder room. To create conversation and make a room impactful, an element of surprise and wow is essential.

Understanding Interior Design Elements and Principles

When Amelda discussed the design process behind her VON LEACH residence project, she emphasised the importance of design elements and principles in each space. As educated interior designers, we are trained in these core concepts, which form the foundation of our creations. Amelda’s breakdown of the elements and principles in her project underscored their critical role in crafting a successful space. Whether the focus of the room is scale, the hierarchy of visual elements, or simple colour tones, these principles are essential in achieving a cohesive and impactful design.

Harmonising Beauty and Practicality in Design

As designers, particularly property stylists, it is crucial to consider how future buyers will use the space and how we can address their needs in our property styling. For instance, if the property is a family home accommodating five people, our choices in sofas, dining arrangements, and outdoor lounges should reflect that. Brahman emphasised the importance of this approach, highlighting his appreciation for critical thinking at the outset of a project to determine the space’s logistics and functionality. His success in creating highly regarded commercial projects stems from thoroughly evaluating how the space will be utilised before applying his distinctive visual flair.

How to Support Client Creativity in Design Projects

During a Q&A session, Amelda touched on the importance of allowing clients to make some design decisions themselves. As interior designers, we leverage our industry expertise, trade connections, and attention to detail in our client projects. We strive to understand our clients’ design preferences and lifestyles to create the best possible package for them. However, not all clients will resonate with every idea we propose, as some decisions are deeply personal and reflective of their individual taste.

Amelda highlighted that selecting artwork can be particularly challenging, as it is difficult to fully grasp the client’s vision. She has found that leaving the choice of artwork to clients allows them to ensure it aligns with their vision, while also providing them with an opportunity for creative input. This approach turns the design process into a personal journey and allows for the gradual addition of unique touches. Amelda shared that often, the finishing touches come from unexpected finds, such as a piece of art from a market or a vase from a second-hand sale. She believes that interior design is a continuous process, where personalisation and refinement can evolve over time.
